POPLAR, LONDON
SOCIAL ENTERPRISE BUILDING
The brief revolved around the redesigning of Chrisp Street Market to revamp the once-thriving aspect of Festival of Britain into a flourishing market that is inclusive and diverse. Second's semester brief particularly focused on the redesign of Chrisp Street Market itself, with a new market canopy and layout. The buildings on the south and east side of the market are also due to be developed into a social enterprise business in order to support diverse communities that make their living or use
Chrisp Street Market.
The client, Poplar HARCA, was interested in extending the creative entrepreneurialism that characterises East London to Poplar, further driving the need to design a Social Enterprise Building that is not only socially and physically inclusive, but exudes monumentality to the market.
For the design of the Social Enterprise Building, I chose to house a social enterprise that revolves around food, as I personally believe that food can bring people together. Sitting down and sharing a meal can be the perfect place to begin a conversation, so I wanted to use food as a starting point to connect people.
I proposed a building that would create a clearly visible landmark . The focus of Gibberd’s market place in Chrisp Street initially was the clock tower, he proposed making this into an observation tower. The concept from my design is also to design a restaurant tower on the East side London which would be the new landmark for Chrisp Street Market and people will enjoy their food with views over the market, but also of the skyline of East, West and North London.
